Broad Band HamNet   (BBHN) is a WiFi based system independent of the normal Web INTERNET., it is more of an Intra-net . It consists of many Nodes each Node can either act as a terminal in its own right or as relay of other nodes, this facilitates a robust interconnected network for radio hams akin to the old Packet systems of the 1980’s and early 90s. But the advantage being the BBHN system runs at Broad Band speed ,so can do all that the normal Internet can do. You can transfer files fast, stream video and audio, do instant messaging and anything else that a normal Internet connection will do. The limitation is that only Amateur radio activities and information should be used on it and only Radio Amateurs should have direct access to it. So there are some security issues that need to be obeyed.
Portable operation is easily possible, I have achieved ranges of 20km back to my own QTH. it is of course as a line of site signal. In the UK BBHN is in its infancy with a limited take up to date and unfortunately not many Nodes are yet with in reach of each other. As more hams get Nodes then this will change and a complete Intra-net system can be implemented . The usage during a national or regional emergency is obvious. But day to day usage will find many applications. Even digital TV could benefit from such a scheme.
